How to write for infographics. Infographics are graphic assets intended to VISUALLY describe a PROCESS or complex set of DATA. That is not what this infographic is. This is an infographic about Skyword’s copywriting best practices for infographics, and a primer on our process for creating them.

 

This infographic was created in partnership with Skyword, a content marketing platform and services provider. While Skyword normally believes infographics are most well suited to visualizing process or data, they wanted to demonstrate how critical it is to be economical with copy in designed assets. By stripping the copy down for this asset and leaning into design, they show the power of a well constructed infographic.

 

This thought leadership infographic’s goal was to:

  • Share the Skyword perspective on different content types with our customers and contributors.
  • Close skills gaps within our community of freelance writers & creatives.
  • Provide valuable information and answers to key questions our writers, creatives, and customers have about how Skyword works, what they believe, and the content marketing industry generally.

The main infographic objective: Explain what you need to know to write killer copy for an infographic within an infographic.

BEST PRACTICES:

  • Keep sentences short! 5-7 words max!
  • Make claims based on NUMBERS and STATISTICS.
  • Start or end claims with numbers.
  • Omit needless words.
  • No. Paragraphs. Unless absolutely necessary.
  • Never write what can be drawn.
  •  Include suggested visuals.
  • Break any/all of these rules if you need to.
